Devonia DK is one of my favourite yarns right now; I've used it in two projects recently. I've found myself moving away from superwash wool for my knitting in favour of yarns that have an authentic feel about them.
John Arbon Textiles has used three local breeds to create Devonia DK; Exmoor Bluefaced, Devon Bluefaced Leicester and Devon Wensleydale. Each brings something rather special to this knitting yarn. Bluefaced Leicester makes for soft wool, not merino soft but that's okay with me because it means this yarn will last and stand up to wear with less pilling. There's a beautiful lustre to the Devonia also thanks to the Bluefaced Leicester and the Wensleydale. This beautiful combination of fibres makes Devonia DK a yarn I like to refer to as proper wool, and being worsted spun it has a wonderful drape to the finished knitted fabric while also having a lovely stitch definition.
Devonia DK is my go-to knitting yarn for sweaters, and there are some great knitting patterns currently available on Ravelry, here are just a few of my favourites.
Cinder Glow is my kind of sweater; it's boxy cropped shape offers versatility fitting right into my autumn/winter wardrobe as it's great worn over tunics and dresses or with jeans and high waisted trousers. It's knit from the top down seamlessly in an easy to follow stitch pattern; cables highlight the raglan shaping of the sleeves which then continue down each side of the sweater.
An interesting construction Havn starts with an i-cord cast on at the right sleeve cuff; it's worked in reverse stocking stitch with a cable pattern down each sleeve. Havn is then finished off with a further cable design along the sweater's hem and an i-cord edge.
Seil is a top-down knit, the drape of Devonia DK lends itself well to this waterfall style cardigan which combines both textured stitches and cables.
An easy to wear cardigan Glacier is knit with lots of texture and a very comfy fit due to a drop-shoulder construction. It's worked bottom-up, starting with a provisional cast-on. Short-rows add shape to the shoulders, and the cardigan is finished off with an i-cord edging which is repeated on the cuffs.
Bohus by Carol Feller first appeared in Issue 7 of Laine Magazine. An engaging knitting project, Bohus is knit in the round with a colourwork yoke it uses purl stitches to add texture and a soft divider between the colourwork transitions. While bottom-up knits divide for the armholes Bohus doesn't, the armhole openings are steeked once the body is complete.
