Summer for me is the perfect time to knit socks! They are excellent portable knitting projects, small enough to pop in your bag if you are heading to the beach or chilling in the park.
Since the arrival of Amble, The Fibre Companies eco-friendly sock yarn, I've been itching to cast on a pair; the choice of patterns is tremendous, so where to start. Here are my top five suggestions to keep your knitting needles busy this summer!
1.) One Sock by Kate Atherley
If you are new to knitting socks, then Kate Atherley's One Sock is a great place to master sock knitting. One Sock literally fits all. This is more of a recipe to sock knitting with all the elements in one booklet to take you through each technique you'll need to know and understand. Different stitch patterns are included, while you can opt to knit a vanilla sock (plain old stocking stitch). Along with adding contrast heels and toes, you can create socks that are unique to your personality.
2.) Dancing Skies by Emily Joy Rickard
Socks need never be boring! How about Dancing Skies by Emily Joy Rickard? Emily's design is to make an appearance in the new issue of Making Stories which is due to be released on September 1st. It's one of three sock patterns featured in the magazine.
Dancing Skies are knit cuff down, the 2x2 rib flows into a colourwork cable and a contrasting short row heel and toe. The design used three colours of Amble, White Heather (C1), Eden Valley (C2), and Buttermere (C3).
You'll not want to hide these away in your socks but show them off!
3.) Hafer by Emma Ducher
Whether you prefer dpns or magic loop, you might want to knit Emma Ducher's Hafer. I love the contrast toe and striped cuffs in this sock pattern, which uses only one mini skein of Amble. Emma has used Eden Valley for the contrast colour and Scarfell Pike as her primary colour. Hafer has the prettiest eyelet pattern that reminders me of daisies when they are just bursting into life.
4.) Soph Socks by Caroline Gilmore
Another consideration is knitting socks toe-up rather than cuff down. Caroline Gilmore's Soph Socks is all about the detail. Beautiful cables pattern travel up the front and back of these socks. At the same time, lace columns accentuate the crisscross cable detail even more. Caroline's design covers sizes from toddler through to adult. Soph Socks are free to download, although the designer has asked you to consider making a donation to one of her favoured good causes.
5.) nyan-yo by Yucca
Lastly on my list of favourites is nyan-yo by Yucca. Striped socks never fail to pull at my heartstrings. I not only love knitting stripes but wearing them too! Yucca design is so clever; this is not your usual striped socks; it's a toe-up with short row toe and heel. nyan-yo is a coined word for "nyan" and "an-yo" in Japanese. It means cat's paw; interesting, right?
However, you decide to knit your socks; remember, your feet deserve a little TLC. They carry you everywhere you go, and if, like me, you are a bit off a hiker, there is really nothing nicer to wear on your feet than something you've lovingly made yourself!
