As it Shetland Wool Week I thought it might be quite nice to take a closer look at
Jamieson & Smith's 2ply Jumper Weight. This is a proper Shetland wool; only the best Shetland fleeces go into producing this gem of a yarn. It's favoured by many knitters and designers including Kate Davies, Gudrun Johnston and Felicity Ford to name but a few and it's now hard to see why.
Jamieson & Smith 2ply Jumper Weight
2ply Jumper Weight was one of Jamieson & Smith's first knitting yarns to be introduced in the late 1960s. It started out with just five natural shades; fawn, moorit, black, silver grey and dark grey. These original five are still present in the current range but are now referred by numbers; 202, 4, 5, 203 and 54 respectively.
It's come a long way since the original five colours with now over 90 colours to chose from offering a rich and varied palette. Another change that came about was the introduction of the 25g balls in 2002 when Jamieson & Smith decided to move away from skeins making 2ply Jumper Weight the ideal choice for knitting Fair Isle and stranded colourwork.

It come into its own when used in stranded colour work; being a Woollen Spun yarn, the fibres hold together well and bloom beautifully when blocked giving the finished fabric a fuzzy halo; which helps hide any irregular stitches.
Although called 2ply Jumper Weight, 2ply refers to how the yarn is constructed from 2plys of yarn twisted together. It knits up to a standard 4ply with 32 stitches and 32 rows over 10cm on 3mm needles. A 25g ball gives you 115m / 125yds to play with.
